After a hiatus from oboe playing, I have tried 7 reed makers over the past 6 or so months. One of the 7 was Fred Korman. And one of the three reeds I received from him was one of the best I have received from any of the 7, with a lovely, stable tone and good dynamic range. On the other hand, consistency among his reeds was not a strong point. One leaked significantly, for example. Nevertheless, because one of the reeds was as good as it was, I’m giving 4 stars. My rating also reflects that the reeds arrived fairly promptly, within 2 weeks, and that Fred responded quickly to an email inquiry.
I ordered 2 reeds that were supposed to be “super stable” and they ended up being 70 and 71 millimeters long, a quarter step flat, and not focused. He plays on a laubin, and good reeds for Laubins don’t always transfer into good reeds for Lorees.
New page up for Fred Korman.
